May your year be hyggeligt!
It’s currently -23 C with a windchill of -32 C in our fair city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. But it is beautiful and sunny. The backyard is a picture postcard. Others are complaining all over Facebook and Twitter and elsewhere. But I am loving this day. I feel…well…positively Canadian.
Danes make it through the frostiest part of their year (and beyond) by creating an atmosphere of hygge, a difficult-to-translate word that connotes warmth, hearth, family, conviviality, hospitality, togetherness, mirth and cheer and more, all at once. Russell McLendon has a nifty article about the concept on Mother Nature Network.
It’s been that kind of season here at the olde house. I hope to continue our sense of hygge through the coming chill weeks and all the months of 2015.
Here’s wishing the same for you! Happy new year.
